Myopia Control (Nearsightedness)

Myopia (“nearsightedness”) is increasing all over the world at a rapid pace. At Allen Eye Associates our doctors have been analyzing scientific research about how to prevent, reduce, or slow the progression of myopia for our patients.

After much study, we are introducing Myopia Control for qualified patients using the latest and safest technologies including prescription medications, specialized soft contact lenses, and overnight, vision-correcting contact lenses to slow progression in our growing young patients.

We provide the following techniques for myopia control:

  • Atropine 0.1-0.5% eyedrops applied once per day at bedtime. This treatment plan is safe, affordable, and very effective for the majority of children.
  • Center Distance Multifocal Contact Lenses. The use of these specialized contact lenses slows the progression by inhibiting the continual lengthening of the eye while also allowing the active child to be more independent of glasses as a primary visual aid.
  • Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT). Also known as “orthokeratology,” this treatment entails overnight wear of custom designed gas permeable contact lenses which, in effect, reshape the surface of the eye to reduce or eliminate the patient’s need to wear glasses during the day.

If you are concerned about how fast your child’s eyes (or maybe your own eyes!) are changing, you should call us for an appointment to determine which technology can help slow down or stop the loss of clear vision. The sooner we intervene, the better the chances for success!
