Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses

Our doctors are experts in soft and rigid gas perm contact lenses as well as custom designs; and can handle the most specialized needs and difficult prescriptions.  If you suffer from allergies or dry eyes, you understand how annoying these conditions can be to maintain comfortable contact lens wear. In the past, many people had to quit wearing their lenses during challenging periods such as the coldest winter months or allergy season. However, new lens materials, particularly daily disposable contact lenses (that is quickly becoming the most popular option among patients), vastly improved lubricating drops and allergy eye medications have made it possible to eliminate the burning itchy eyes associated with these conditions. Many of our patients affected by these chronic issues have experienced relief and the joy of resuming regular lens wear despite their problems

With new advances in daily multifocal and daily toric soft contact lenses available many more will be able to appreciate the comfort and convenience of the healthiest way to wear contacts

Spherical Contact Lenses:

Spherical contact lenses correct nearsightedness (Myopia) or farsightedness (Hyperopia) and are indicated by a minus or plus signs in your prescription.

Toric Contact Lenses

Toric contact lenses are special lenses that correct astigmatism (a vision condition that causes blurred vision due to either the irregular shape of the cornea or the lens inside the eye), which can accompany either nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Presbyopic Options:

Multifocal.

Multifocal lenses are designed to provide good vision for people with presbyopia (an age-related eye condition in which there is a gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus on near objects). These lenses strive to provide comfortable vision at distance, intermediate and near ranges. In multifocal contact lenses the prescriptive powers are blended across the lens and your visual system will learn in time to select the proper prescription for the moment depending on the task at hand. These lenses are available in different materials and replacement schedules.

Monovision Modality.

Monovision is another option for presbyopic patients. With Monovision, you wear a contact lens in your dominant eye to correct your distance vision and another lens in your non-dominant eye to correct for near (some people can get away with wearing only one lens). Although with each eye individually you will not see as well at all distances your brain should adapt so that when using both eyes you will be able to see distance, intermediate and near comfortably.

Other presbyopic options.

An alternative to these options, you may want to consider is being fit with contact lenses that will correct your distance vision optimally and then wear a pair of reading glasses, OTC readers, or bifocal readers as needed over them.

Contact Lens Solutions:

Although they may be slightly more expensive, name brand solutions are always best to use as part of your contact lens care regimen.  The generic solutions are simply older generation formulas with less benefits as compared with the sophisticated brands your doctor recommends. Furthermore, the ingredients in generics frequently change within each store brand making it more difficult to determine the cause should contact lens complications arise.

Multi-purpose solution:
These are dual-purpose liquids that both clean and disinfect your contact lenses with a simple rinse-and-store method. Although these solutions are called “no rub” it is recommended you do add a short period of mechanical rubbing to remove debris/deposits from the lens surface.

Hydrogen Peroxide based solutions: These care systems are preservative-free and are often recommended for contact lens wearers who may be sensitive to preservatives and disinfecting agents found in multipurpose contact lens solutions. These are also a good option for patients suffering from allergies and dryness.

ATTENTION ALL CONTACT LENS WEARERS

For those patients who wear contact lenses, there are additional questions, diagnostic testing and calculations that need to be performed along with your periodic comprehensive eye examination. A more detailed evaluation of the cornea (front surface of the eye) and the inside of both upper and lower eyelids is required at every visit to check for allergic or wear-induced medical issues. Careful monitoring of the performance of the contact lens is critical in reducing the risk of lens related complications including decrease in available oxygen, dryness, wear intolerance or even more serious events such as abrasions, infections and corneal ulceration. At each routine eye exam, we also review wearing schedules, cleaning and disinfection products and procedures as well as discuss new products that have entered the market.

A contact lens prescription is not the same as a prescription for eyeglasses. As an FDA, Class 3 medical device, a contact lens prescription is valid for 12 months and must include all pertinent information such as the manufacturer, plastic material, as well as the numerical information to ensure exact fitting curves, overall diameter and power configurations across the surface of the contact lenses. Modification of these parameters may prove beneficial even within the same brand name product year to year.
